Upgrading In Technical Skills Does Not Result In Leadership

Technical Professionals Who Want Management Positions

Since I meet a lot of people who work as technical professionals in fields like IT (information technology) and engineering, I want to expand on facts about technical skills.  Many of these technical professionals want to become managers and specifically, supervisory type of management positions, not just project managers.  They often upgrade their skills by taking more courses related to IT and engineering, ie., technical skills.

Although continued education is always good, upgrading in TECHNICAL skills just results in being able to have MORE TECHNICAL responsibilities, NOT LEADERSHIP roles like management positions.  And this includes project management courses too which just prepares people to manage projects rather than other people.

In my former industry, pharmaceuticals, it was the same thing. Pharma companies liked our sales force taking additional courses in medical conditions and pharmaceutical treatments. These were all TECHNICAL courses that never prepared us for LEADERSHIP roles in management. So if you want to be in leadership roles, you must upgrade yourself in LEADERSHIP skills and especially in COMMUNICATION SKILLS, rather than technical.
