MBA Doesn’t Guarantee You A Management Job

Some people always thought that a MBA degree is a sure fire way to guarantee getting a management job but that is not always the case.  This is especially true when these days, there are lots of MBA graduates out there.

I did my MBA at McMaster University and although I technically studied ‘management’, I did not get a real management position until about ten years into my pharmaceutical career.  It took me awhile to develop the right leadership skills as well as communication skills that most management positions required and MBA school certainly did not cover these in any of the courses I took.

MBA Is Not Management Training

One thing to realize is that a MBA is not management training.  MBA programs involve courses in accounting, finance, economics, statistics, operations and other types of business related courses.  They are good education but the MBA program in itself is not enough for most management jobs.

To get promoted to management positions, especially those that involve supervisory tasks managing other people such as hiring, firing and conducting annual reviews of employees, one must have other skills not normally taught in MBA schools.  Don’t get me wrong as I do believe that getting a MBA is helpful.  It just wasn’t enough to get me to management.

In addition to a MBA, one needs relevant work experience and leadership communication skills in order to get management roles especially in corporations.  Securing all three of these components will get you a much better chance of getting promoted to a management position at a big company.

Here’s a video I shot discussing very briefly, the reality of the MBA degree for management positions and a 3-part video training series I offer for free.  You can get the details at leadership skills videos or access below with your name and email.
