How Rock And Roll Made Me Accept The Gay Community

So it’s Pride month up here in Canada and since I started my new community project called Unity Power Force which promotes both anti-racism and anti-discrimination, I thought it would be appropriate to share a bit about my own thoughts and journey about the gay community. After all, Unity Power Force does advocate ending discrimination.

First of all I have to be perfectly honest and admit that as a straight individual, I had not always accepted the gay community. When I was a young grade school kid, the gay or LGBT community was pretty well hidden still in the closet. There were not many gay people out in the open at that time. So me and my school buddies never really got exposed to gay people.

In fact when we first learned of the very existence of gay people, we thought that it was just plain weird and so unnatural to be gay. Needless the say during those years, we did not accept the gay community.

The Influence Of Music

Then as I made it into my teen years, I discovered rock and roll and key examples from the music world influenced me to finally change my personal views on those with different sexual orientations. The video below describes this journey a bit more and how three cases from my rock and roll world made me realize that somebody’s sexual orientation had no bearing on how talented or good somebody is in our world.

My Own Journey Towards Accepting The Gay Community

So whether the community is called gay, LGBT, LGBTQ, LGBTQIA, LGBTQIA2 or LGBTQIAplus, it’s all cool with me. I guess that’s part of my own evolution as a person as I’ve grown to be accepting of all people.
