Motivational Business Speaker Changing Investments

This motivational business speaker is changing up his investments drastically.  When I was speaking to a few of my neighbours out in the back while out dogs were playing the other day, one of them mentioned that another neighbour recently sold his condo townhouse for a certain price.  This unit is very similar in size as the one I live in.

I emailed my real estate agent about this and he sent me the listing which showed this house and it confirmed the price sold. I was quite stunned because this meant that the value of my own house went up $100,000 in the last three years since I bought it.  There’s no way that any mutual fund would have been able to produce such gains in recent years of even in the last five or ten years.

Shifting From Mutual Funds To Real Estate

Most of us have probably experienced investment value losses in our portfolios during the last few years.  Although I know that we are suppose to be patient when it comes to investing, the track records of mutual funds and the stock markets in general have been pretty lack lustre over the last ten years.

So this is why I’ve decided that I’m shifting a huge chunk of my investment portfolio away from the equity markets and mutual funds.  Instead, I’m moving into real estate investing which has proven to be a great long term investments if you invest in the right areas.

I have to emphasize the importance of right areas.  If I had stayed in Montreal for the last few years, I wouldn’t have had the $100,000 gain in real estate value like I did here in Ontario.  Different areas are different markets.

I  have to admit that this motivational business speaker is not an expert on real estate investment so I had to learn the basics this summer by reading and taking a seminar.  I’m also relying on some of the real estate investment groups that are already set up with adequate research already done for potential investors.

As of this week, I’ve taken the steps to acquire two separate properties as investments.  They already have good tenants and property management is in place.  I’ll have more on my entry into real estate investing later.

In the meantime, if your investment portfolio has also had very lack lustre results during the last couple of years, you might want to look into real estate investing as well. It is an area that one will have to at least learn the basics before taking a plunge though.  But there are many good sources out there to learn from.

This is yet another example of being never too late to learn new skills which was actually a topic of a past episode of Motivational WebTV.  If there is a new area that is important, then take the time to learn it.

Real estate investing is very much like the Monopoly game.  I’ll outline the benefits and reasons why real estate is a good investment choice in future posts.
