Theory Of Motivation On Commitments

I was asked recently by an individual who had issues in making commitments.  She asked whether there would always be fear involved when making any commitments to anything.  This was what was holding her back in making any.  Well, I thought about it and here’s my theory of motivation in this subject.

Personally, I don’t think there’s always fear involved and I think she will be quite happy to hear this.  Let me give you some real life examples where I made commitments.

Theory Of Motivation In Karate Competition

Many years ago, I made a commitment to go after a world championship in karate before I finally retire from competition.  In order to have any good chances of winning one, I knew that I had to commit to a demanding training schedule and train at a level I never did before.

So my theory of motivation here is that the higher level of training was uncharted territory for me so there will be some discomfort.  But at no time did I fear it.

Theory Of Motivation With My Dogs

I made a commitment that I was going to do my best to take good care of my two dogs Chester and Roxie for the rest of their lives.  Anybody will agree that this is a huge commitment, especially for two dogs, never mind one.  Was there any fear involved?  I would say no.  But I also knew there was going to be a lot of work required.  Again, no fear in my theory of motivation in this example.

Theory Of Motivation On The Ski Slopes

Okay, here’s an example where there might have been some fear.  I made a commitment to get decent on steep ‘black diamond’ ski slopes so I forced myself to train on them all winter.  Was there any fear?  In this case, I would say there was some but I still made the commitment to ski those black diamonds.

So my overall theory of motivation here on making commitments is that sometimes there can be fear while at other times, there isn’t.  It just depends on what you are making a commitment to.

However, in all cases of commitments, there will be some discomfort since you will be going into territory that you don’t normally venture into.  Otherwise, if everything was comfortable, there wouldn’t be any need to make commitments.
