Self Help Motivation
Since it is
still early in the year, I want to talk about the use of one of our
most precious resources, which is time. Alan
Lakein, an expert on time management, said the following.
“Time = life; therefore,
waste your time and waste your life, or master
your time and master your life.”
I love this self help motivation quote and I would like to apply it to
one of the favorite
activities that most people enjoy each day. That activity is
watching television. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not going
to come out and say that watching TV is a complete waste of time,
especially if it happens to be an educational program. And
yes, entertainment shows do have a place in our lives as well.
But one thing I noticed is that when the commercial breaks come on,
many of us viewers are practically held prisoners as we watch the same,
often boring commercials played over and over again. In fact,
out of a typical 30-minute TV program, up to 10 minutes of that half
hour are the commercials.
Even if a TV show is worth watching, I think most of us will agree that
one third of each half hour watching those TV commercials is a complete
waste of our time. Of course, we can always record TV shows
and then fast forward through the commercials. But when we
are watching shows in real time, can we do anything about those
My answer is yes. Using some imagination, we can certainly
use the time during commercial breaks to do many other productive
tasks. For example, I often groom my two lhasa apso dogs over
two separate commercial breaks. I’ve also done sets of
exercise with weights or martial arts during commercials.
Cleaning the house or preparing food at intervals during the several
minutes of commercials can also be possible.
I have done some light reading of both printed books and ebooks on my
laptop computer during commercials. Some audio podcasts that
are quite short in duration can easily fit during breaks. You
just have to turn the volume of the TV down.
So as you can imagine, there are lots of things we can do during those
10 minutes of TV commercials. If it’s a one hour show you’re
watching, you can use an extra 20 minutes of productivity that
otherwise might have been wasted if you just sat through the
commercials. A two-hour movie would give you 40
minutes. And who says you can’t find time to exercise!
So I hope that for this year, you won’t have to waste so much time when
watching TV because now there is a more productive way to do so.
