Personal Growth And Development Relocation

I just saw a report of the best major cities to live in and it was interesting to see several Canadian cities listed there.  Vancouver made it to #5 while Toronto was at #15.  Obviously, these were only the big cities from around the world as small towns would be much too numerous to factor into the ratings.

Many people have relocated to other cities and even countries for work related reasons.  I have done this myself several times throughout my own working career so far.  After all, many folks go where the opportunities and the money are.

But this leads to a question that came up in my head.  Would you ever relocate for personal growth and development?  Would you ever move for reasons other than money or work?

Better Places For Personal Growth And Development

Some people who have gone tired of the big city rat race actually did change their careers and relocated to other places where the lifestyle is at a much more relaxed place.  Of course, not everyone can afford to do this but many will argue that if there is a will, than there is a way since lifestyle should be a major factor in determining where you live.

For myself, I’m pretty happy where I am right now in Mississauga which is west of Toronto.  But I don’t know if I’ll stay here for good.  I do have thoughts of relocating out west to be closer to the Canadian Rockies for better skiing someday.  But again, like many other people, business opportunities may be a deciding factor.

If I can develop my own business so that I can work out of any location, I may very well go out west for a better lifestyle which in my mind, would contribute to my personal growth and development.  Or at the very least, I would spend part of the year out west while remaining here in the Toronto area.

But the Canadian Rockies are really nice during the summer as well and all year round for that matter.  So there would have to be really good reasons for me to stay here in Toronto rather than spend all my time out west.  These are just some developments that I have yet to work out.

Moving or staying put for work purposes has merit but if you find that you are in a place where the only thing that is good about it is the proximity to work (especially a job you don’t particularly have a lot of passion for), you will find in time that life won’t be that great there.  If you are caught in this particular situation where the place you are living in is all work and no real play, then I strongly suggest that you start to make some plans to move towards a better location.

Personal growth and development are important.  If where you are (or where you are relocating to) has very little opportunities for working on yourself, then your soul will not last long there.  Don’t ignore this fact.

Start to investigate other possible work opportunities in locations where you will prefer to be in.  It might be similar work or even a different (and better) line of work at another location.  But the change in location, if it is a better one, will be worth it in the long run.

So have you ever considered relocating for personal growth and development (rather than just work)?  If so, where would you want to relocate to?  Please share below.
