Summer Fitness Program

Well, I’m several weeks into my summer fitness program which I described in a previous post and it is working out really well.  The change over to this summer schedule from my spring program coincided with the opening of the outdoor swimming pool I have at home.

I’m currently doing lengths in the swimming pool with my advanced swim workout and I’m fairly stablized with it.  I’m able to get through it without any problems but I am getting a good cardio as well as muscular workout with it – I can feel it especially when I’m doing the butterfly stroke lengths as described at the previous post where I outlined this advanced swim workout – just hit the last link to see it.

I’m in the swimming pool three times per week and it’s been great especially during the hot heat wave days we’ve been having here in the greater Toronto area.  I can workout during this heat without sweating!

However, I think the three days per week is a good frequency for me as I wouldn’t want to do more than that as far as pool workouts go.  I don’t want to get too bored in the pool and don’t want too much chlorine on me.

Balancing Out With Other Workouts

The other workouts that I’m still doing on my non-swim days are helping me balance out my swimming sessions.  I do appreciate the variety of the two strength training with weights days as well as the two martial arts days I’ve scheduled.

The only thing is that one of the martial arts days involve weapons which I must workout with outdoors.  If my martial arts weapons day for the week happens to fall on a rain day, then I’m out of luck for that workout.  I’ll probably just do some martial arts forms and stretching instead.

Besides the two group rollerblading outings so far this season, I haven’t had any other group fitness activities.  The heat waves are just too hot for hikes so I haven’t been doing any hikes lately.  Hikes are best during spring and fall.

I may check out a few local beach volleyball outings though.  It seems to be a nice summer, social fitness activity and I see some of these being run by local Meetup groups.
