Motivational Keynote Speaker On Commuting Time

Hooray!  My home city of Toronto, Canada has just been announced (once again) as the worst place in the country for commuting.  The average commute time that people in the GTA (greater Toronto area) must take is 80 minutes each way during the work week.  When I saw this announcement on the TV evening news, I just shook my head and knew that this motivational keynote speaker will have to write a blog post about this!

Commuters either get stuck in traffic driving into and out of the downtown Toronto area each weekday.  I know what it’s like as I’ve taken this very route for years and I can tell you, it’s really no fun at all when you are driving a standard shift sports car and have to go between first and second gear all the way!

Other commuters have to get to the train station early enough so that they can actually find a parking space for their car, and then take the GO train or subway train into Toronto.  The transit stations are zoos during rush hours as I’ve been stuck in the middle of these crowds too.

Fortunately for me, I no longer have to commute as I work from my home in Mississauga, about 30 minutes west of Toronto.  If I have to commute to Toronto for any reason (for example, do a motivational keynote speaker talk downtown somewhere), I try to travel outside of rush hours.

But for the poor folks who have to do the 80 minutes each way, I want to put this into some perspective.  The total daily commute time of 160 minutes translates to 40,000 minutes in a given 50 work week year.  This is 666.67 hours each year stuck in commuting!

Motivational Keynote Speaker Recommendations For Commuters

This motivational keynote speaker considers 666.67 hours per year too much time wasted in commuting to and from work.  Personally, I don’t think that’s a great lifestyle.

Now, I know that some of you will be saying, ‘But Clint, I need to do that commute in order to work – what else would I do?’

That’s a good and valid question.  First of all, if I was caught in a commute situation like that with so many hours each year, I would definitely start a plan to work towards changing jobs to a location closer to home or if I can afford it, move closer to downtown Toronto which is what many people have done.

But since downtown real estate is very expensive and quite small in terms of size of properties, I would prefer to change the work location rather than move downtown.  You might feel otherwise and that’s okay.  I just like to enjoy my bigger space in the suburbs.

Another thing I would suggest is if you have to commute, you might as well use that time productively.  Instead of sleeping, I would use that commute time to catch up on reading books and listening to educational audio.

Just imagine how much education you could learn in 666 hours per year.  You can definitely work well towards learning a new language in that time.

This motivational keynote speaker is quite proud of his home city Toronto with its diversity, cleanliness and many entertainment venues.  But one thing I’m not proud of about Toronto is the top prize for worst place in Canada for commuting.  Traffic seems to be getting worse each year too and it is expected that the average of 80 minutes each way will increase in the future.  Yikes!

Oh by the way, if you commute and could use an audio program for personal development, check out my three hour audio CD program version of The Life Champion In You.

If you have to commute for work, let me know about your experience and if you plan to do anything to improve your situation.  Just enter your comments below as I’ll be very interested to read them from commuters out there.
