Motivational Business Speaker On Persistence
As you know, in addition to being a motivational business speaker, I’m a professional ski instructor during the winter. When I teach my beginner and intermediate ski students, one of the techniques I show them is the hockey stop. This is when skiers turn both skis quickly to stop on the snow, much like how hockey players stop on ice.
The hockey stop is actually quite challenging at first for most beginners and I’ve seen many of them try it for a few times only to quit in frustration. They then continue to use the easier but less efficient snowplow stop on skis.
I always tell these students that in order to learn how to do a hockey stop, one must make at least 20 to 30 attempts before finally being able to do a decent one. Each time gets better and better but they have to start at #1 and pay their dues to work through the numbers.
This is only for their more dominant and stronger side too. In order to do a hockey stop with their less dominant leg, it will likely take 40 to 50 attempts. But this is persistence and a drill that I use to train my ski students on this is shown in the new video below.
With persistence and real efforts, my ski students will be able to do hockey stops and they will always want to use this new skill whenever they are on the ski slopes.
Like Other Skills In Life
The hockey stop actually reminds me of other skills in life which are also challenging at first but with persistence, they are learnable. Some examples are learning to ride a bike, park a car, speak a new language, use a new software program and learning how to swim. Even speaking and presentation skills as a motivational business speaker would be considered such skills.
Once these skills are learned, one would probably use them on a regular basis. If you have ever fallen short on some specific skills, maybe think about whether you really had the persistence there or not.
If not, then maybe revisit them this time with much more persistence and effort over time.
