Muslim Festival Is Part Of My Own Multicultural Diversity Training

Friday, July 30th, 2010

#diversity #multicultural #muslim #islamic #mississauga

Here in my hometown of Mississauga (beside Toronto) is yet another festival this weekend.  There has been different festivals every weekend here this summer.  For this weekend, it’s the MuslimFest which showcases arts and culture from the Muslim community here.  I will be catching a part of it for my own multicultural diversity training.

Here in North America, the Muslim or Islamic cultures are among the most misunderstood because of the media and international events that too place in recent years.  There have already been some Muslim groups like that private high school I spoke at a few months ago who are trying to reach out to the rest of the community.

I think that’s great and it’s up to the rest of us to do our part and learn more about them.  After all, ignorance is how troubles start between different cultures.  Diversity involves learning about each other to eliminate ignorance.  And what better way to learn about different cultures than a fun festival?

I’m willing to bet that there won’t be too many Asians like myself showing up at the MuslimFest this weekend but that’s too bad.  Other cultures like the Asian groups (and everyone else) should be attending each other’s festivals to learn about each other.  Ignorance in diversity is not just among white groups as it can also exist among ethnic and visible minority groups as well.

Diversity training is for everyone no matter what race or culture.  This is why I always try to get exposed to different cultures especially via multicultural festivals whenever possible for my own education.  And then I try to help other groups through my diversity talks to try and help them integrate into our communities successsfully.

In case you missed that Mississauga television news segment where they showed part of my visit to that private Muslim high school, here it is again below.  If you have any comments, please share below as well.

Carassauga Cultural Festival Highlights – Motivational WebTV #11 Multicultural Diversity

Monday, July 12th, 2010

#cultural #multicultural #diversity #mississauga #toronto

I went to two different cultural festivals this weekend to get my diversity fill, one called Carabram in the neighbouring town of Brampton and the Mosaic Festival which showcases south Asian cultures here in my hometown of Mississauga.

At the Carabram multicultural festival, the highlight for me was attending the Myanmar pavilion since I was especially invited by my friend Ame who was a volunteer there.  I got to learn about her country’s development over the years and how people like her decided to leave the country formerly known as Burma due to the unstable political military government.  It was very interesting to hear about such stories from somebody who experienced these firsthand.

There will be cultural festivals pretty well each weekend here in the Mississauga and Toronto area all summer long but the event that started the season off in my opinion is the big event back in May which is Carassauga.  Carassauga is an annual huge multicultural festival which showcased over 60 different countries.

Below are many video highlights from Carassauga this year in the latest episode of Clint Cora Motivational WebTV since I tie in cultural festivals with diversity.

Multicultural festivals like Carassauga are one of the most effective diversity tools because they help people bridge cultural gaps with each other.  Being exposed to each other’s cuisine, arts, music, dance and other cultural components only help to gain understanding and appreciation of each other’s differences.  This is important in diversity.

As you can see from the video highlights, Carassauga was a very entertaining three days here in Mississauga and for the $10 admission fee all weekend, it can’t be beat.  I made a point of attending every single pavilion to get exposed to as many different cultures as I can in the name of diversity.

If you don’t have any such multicultural festivals where you live, maybe you can help organize one even if it’s on a much smaller scale compared to Carassauga.  This gives people who are different, a chance to expose their cultures in a positive way and for all others to learn.

I hope you enjoy the Carassauga cultural festival highlights and I welcome any comments below.  If you missed past episodes, see them at the Clint Cora Motivational WebTV archive.

Mayor Hazel McCallion Meets Karate World Champion Motivational Speaker Clint Cora

Monday, June 14th, 2010

#mississauga #toronto #ontario #peel

Last week, I was invited to be a keynote speaker for a local Rotarac club which is an arm of Rotary International for members who are up to 29 years of age. Rotarac gives these young people opportunities to give back to their own communities by volunteering for some very worthwhile community projects. This Rotarac club had their annual dinner meeting event at the Mississauga Golf and Country Club where I was scheduled to speak. They had also invited Mayor Hazel McCallion of Mississauga but the word is that she had some scheduling conflicts.

It turns out that soon after the dinner meeting started, Mayor Hazel did in fact walk in much to the appreciation of the meeting attendees. She was squeezed into the speaking agenda and gave a great account of her observations during her recent trip to China. She told the audience that the young people here in Canada better get ready because the Chinese young people are really gearing up to be competitive on an international level. She also urged Mississauga young people to keep on doing what they are doing with Rotarac and become role models for the younger students at the local schools.

After Mayor McCallion finished her address, it was my turn and I gave a shorter version of my motivational speaker presentation. Some of the attendees who are members of local Rotary clubs have heard me before but the members of the Rotarac club and most of their guests have not.

This was the first time that Mayor Hazel McCallion was in attendance for one of my live talks and it looks like she enjoyed it. She certainly appreciated some of the jokes during my presentation at least.

After my talk, I gave her a copy of my book The Life Champion In You and we discussed how I could be of service to the city of Mississauga. One thing she said right away was to get me to speak to her teen advisory committee. I told her that since Mississauga is my home town, I would be willing to help out to make our community safer and better with my talks and status as a karate world champion motivational speaker.

Below is a photo of Mayor Hazel McCallion and I. Again, I welcome any comments you may have at my blog.

You Are Never Too Old For Self Improvement

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

#selfimprovement #seniors  —  Some of the local audiences I spoke to over the last year were seniors and a few of these distinguished individuals even asked me if they were too old for self improvement.  During one talk when one older gentleman asked me this, I responded by telling the audience about a senior citizen I saw on the TV news.

This senior is a competitive swimmer and actively competes in the senior masters athletic competitions internationally.  He has already broken about four world records in swimming for the seniors age category and he plans to break at least two more.  The TV news segment showed him during his training sessions at the pool as well.  The really impressive thing here is that at the time of the news segment last year, this man was 100 years old!  My audience was quite impressed by that.

I recently spoke at a local Probus club right here in my own hometown of Mississauga (west of Toronto) and there were about 100 seniors who were all retired.  I did a 45 minute version of my motivational keynote and this group was quite impressive especially for a group of seniors.  They had a huge screen, wireless mic and computer projector all waiting for me when I arrive for the talk.  They were even willing to supply me with their own laptop already loaded with PowerPoint but I told them that I would use my own.

As far as the reception of my talk, it went great.  The way I positioned self improvement for them is that I’m aware that their doctors are probably urging them to get regular exercise in.  Exercise can be one of the major forms of self improvement for the seniors.  I also mentioned that the self improvement content I presented during my talk can also be used for them to help out their own children and grandchildren for their life goals as well.  Most of them accepted this fact as well.

Perhaps the best way to summarize the issue about self improvement and age is by the following email I received from Barbara Saunders, the Vice-President of this Probus club.

“You were like a breath of fresh air.  It is so hard to find interesting speakers, and I must admit that the speaker we had last month nearly put us all to sleep.”

“We may be a group of seniors, but we are a very active, congenial group that want to stay that way.  You gave us inspiration!  You made us realize that we are not too old to have goals.  You made us think about our lives and how we can make them better.  It is always helpful to hear someone elses’ story and how they overcame adversity.  You are living proof that you can grow from adversity and end up having a good life or even a great life.”

“I liked the fact that if you are trying to accomplish something, all you have to do is give 10% more effort.  If you keep that up eventually you will get where you want to be.  Thank you again for coming out and inspiring us all to become better people.”

It was a real pleasure speaking to this group of seniors and again, you are never too old for self improvement.  For more information on my talks, just go to my section on Speaking Programs and Seminars.

Toronto Motivational Speaker At CARP Meeting

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

#toronto #motivational  —  CARP is a national, non-partisan, non-profit organization in Canada committed to a new vision for aging in this country.  They are involved in promoting social change that will bring financial security, equitable access to health care and freedom from discrimination.  So when I was invited to come speak at the local Mississauga chapter of CARP as their first ever Toronto motivational speaker, I was quite honoured to do so.

Their mandate is to promote and protect the interests, rights and quality of life for Canadians as people age in this country.  I went in to do a slightly shorter version of my full motivational keynote to a receptive audience.  It was a very nice facility since they used a theatre room in the Origin Evergreen facility in Mississauga.

I wasn’t aware that they had invited local press to come in and cover the event.  Although staff photographers from SNAP North Mississauga didn’t arrive until midway through my talk, they took photos of the event after the presentation.  You can see some of the photos as well as the writeup at the SNAP North Mississauga article.

I spoke to some of the CARP board members and they seem to be a group with lots of ideas for events in the community.  They are also willing to do some events that other community groups have not done.  So I told them that if they ever do an event where they could use a Toronto motivational speaker, I would be available.

Since I use my karate bo staff weapon during my talks and also invite some members of the audience to try them out, we were able to get a photo afterwards with CARP members with bo staffs as shown below.  All for fun as well as some motivational learning as well.

If you represent a group or company in the GTA and could use Toronto motivational speakers for a future event or meeting, check out my speaking programs.

Multicultural Diversity Events All Summer

Monday, May 31st, 2010

#diversity #diversitytraining #multicultural #culture

Once again, looks like we will be having all sorts of multicultural diversity events all summer here in the Mississauga and Toronto area.  We started off with a bang with our three day event called Carassauga Festival of Cultures.  It featured pavilions showcasing over 60 different countries from around the world and since they are put on by locals, it shows the highly diverse population we have here now.

I’ve been to Carassauga a few times and never tire from attending.  It’s great to get so much exposure to cultures and learn about them.  This can only be positive as it helps us become more effective in our diverse working environments these days.

This year’s Carassauga was more condensed than other years I attended.  They managed to bring about half of the 30 or so pavilions right on one site at the Hershey Centre rather than at various indoor locations spread throughout the city.  There was much less driving around than before although I think the organizers took a risk with having many of the pavilions under outdoor tents.  The weather was cooperative as it was sunny and hot rather than rain.  But the heat was a problem at times too.  I for one went inside a few times just to escape from the sun.

I did manage to get lots of video footage of the various performances in music and dance from the different cultures and a future episode of Clint Cora Motivational WebTV will definitely show the best of the best that I took anyway.  But it will be several weeks yet because there are two other episodes ahead of this one since I want to feature diversity topics every few episodes and we just had one (the Chinese food episode).

The event was great and the video highlights will definitely be worth waiting for.  Carassauga remains one of the best multicultural diversity events anywhere.  If you can’t wait, the video will likely be uploaded to video sites like YouTube well before the official launch of the episode.  You just have to do a search for it.

Canadian Motivational Speaker At Same Toronto Venue For Different Groups

Friday, May 28th, 2010

#canadian #canada #mississauga #toronto

Looks like later in June, there will be a rare case where a Canadian motivational speaker will be booked for two different Toronto groups at the same venue.  Of course, that speaker will be me!

It’s totally ironic but I will be speaking for two totally separate audiences with pretty well the same keynote which will be my signature motivational speech based on my book ‘The Life Champion In You‘.  One group will be a Probus club which consists mainly of retired professionals and they will be having me speak at their monthly meeting during the morning followed by lunch.  The venue will be at the Mississauga Golf and Country Club which is a really nice venue as I’ve spoken there previously for yet another group.

After that group, I’ll probably drive home which will only about ten minutes away.  Talk about really convenient.  I’ll get to rest my voice, workout, take my dogs for a walk and replenish my stock of books and CDs since a few hours later, I’ll be returning back to the same venue for the other group.

The other group also requested a Canadian motivational speaker for their event.  This time, it will be the annual year end banquet for a Rotaract Club which has a membership consisting of mainly young professionals who are in their first few years of their working careers.  Some might still be in the college years.

Both audiences will get my motivational speech but the duration might be slightly different and the emphasis might be different as well since both groups are in different age groups.

But no matter since this will be a good and easy day in regards to travel for this Canadian motivational speaker.  Two different audiences each with about 100 people with the same talk in the same day.

By the way, if you are with an organization based in Canada and especially in the greater Toronto area, there are great benefits in using a Toronto based speaker such as myself.  These benefits are described in Toronto speakers.

Press Release – Karate Champion To Help Muslim Students Bridge Cultural Gaps

Monday, May 24th, 2010

#diversity #canada #canadian #ontario #toronto #mississauga

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Karate World Champion Helps Muslim Students Bridge Cultural Gaps

Martial arts motivational speaker’s visit to Islamic school will be a victory for Greater Toronto Area diversity

Mississauga, Ontario, Canada – May 17, 2010 – There will be a very unique event at the ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) High School in Mississauga, Ontario.  The ISNA’s private high school for Muslim students will have a special non-Muslim guest on Thursday June 3, 2010 as part of their Youth Leadership Day.  Past member of the Canadian National Karate team, Karate World Champion, author and motivational speaker Clint Cora will be making a rare visit to the school to present a special talk just for these students.  His appearance will be very significant since it will help bridge cultural gaps in the GTA (greater Toronto area).

Due to past incidents both abroad and even right here in the greater Toronto area, the Muslim community has unfortunately and wrongfully suffered a negative image in some of the Canadian public’s eyes.  As a consequence, the community including these young high school students sometimes feel it difficult to integrate with the rest of Canadian society.

Clint Cora, who is of Chinese-Canadian background, is in a position to help these students as he says, “One thing my community has in common with the Muslim community is that we are both visible minorities here.  However, us Chinese have been here in Canada for many more years and therefore we have a lot of experience as visible minorities that we can share to help others.”

Cora will be doing a special presentation customized just for the ISNA audience.   The students and staff will be getting a taste of the high energy talks that Clint Cora does on a regular basis at companies, conferences and other events.  His talks also include very entertaining martial arts weaponry to highlight key points for achieving success.

Cora praises the ISNA as he says, “This is a major step for the ISNA as they are making a huge effort to learn how to reach out to others.  I feel so honoured to be a part of this event.  It will be a real victory for diversity here in Ontario.”

Clint Cora’s presentation at ISNA located at 2200 South Sheridan Way (just west of Southdown) will start at about 9 am on June 3 and press members are invited to set up on site at 8:30 am.

Chinese Food And Diversity In Motivational Video

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

#chinesefood #dimsum #motivational #motivation #diversity

I hope you are intrigued with the title of this blog post. You might be wondering what does Chinese food and diversity have to do with a motivational video. Well, as I mentioned before, diversity skills are important for achieving success in today’s diverse environment and I will feature diversity topics in every 3-4 episodes of Clint Cora Motivational WebTV.

So we are now at episode number eight and you are indeed going to be seeing some yummy Chinese food – dim sum to be exact.  If you are not familiar with Chinese dim sum, then this will be an educational food video for you as well as I take you inside one of my local Chinese restaurants here in Mississauga.

You will see that I use Chinese dim sum as one of my diversity tools to help me build both business and personal relationships with people, especially those who are different from me and not very familiar with dim sum.  Ethnic food in fact is a great diversity tool to use.  Building these relationships have helped me greatly over the years to achieve success in different fields where I benefited from the help of others.

This is why this episode is still very much a motivational video because it shows how you can use a very enjoyable experience like dining and use it as a tool for success.  Don’t forget that to achieve success these days often requires the partnership of others and what better way to foster these relationships than over food.  The Chinese food twist in all this just gives it a diversity spin.

I hope you like this latest Motivational WebTV episode and of course as always, I look forward to your comments below.  Other episodes of my motivational video series are archived for your convenience.
