College RA Group Gets Diversity Training

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

#college #university #diversity #diversitytraining  –  It was interesting to present my college diversity speaking program to the group of RA students at Daemen College just north of Buffalo, New York this week.

RA stands for Residence Assistant and they are usually senior college students.  This group of RAs were back on campus after a camping trip to bond and my diversity talk was part of a multi-day training program that they go through before the school year starts up.

I asked the Director of Residence what a typical RA does and she told me that the RAs would organize activities at their residence as well as to help sort out any problems or issues from college students staying on residence that might pop up during the year.  The RAs are pretty well representing their residence floors or units.

This is probably not an easy job especially when things can get busy since these RAs have their own college studies as well.  But I think it sounds like a great experience and will certainly look really good on a resume.

Given that college students can come from all parts of the country as well as the world now, exposure to diversity training is a smart idea for the RA groups at colleges.  We are seeing increasingly diverse student bodies on campuses and knowing how to deal with such diversity can only benefit not only the entire campus, but help prepare college students for the real working world.

In many cases, the real working environments out there are even more diverse than on college campuses.  As bonus tips, I gave this group of RA students some valuable information with respect to future job interviews and diversity which will come in handy when they graduate.

More information about my college speaking programs including diversity are available at my website.  I am available to speak at any college in the United States and Canada.

Their Thoughts On College Campus Diversity

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Here is part of a nice letter I received from Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, New York after my college campus diversity presentation there earlier this week.

“This letter is to thank you for your wonderful presentation on diversity to our students at Mohawk Valley Community College on April 14, 2010.”

“Your ability to get the students interested and interacting with you was tremendous, especially in the “lunch room” atmosphere you were speaking in.  Students were very pleased with your lecture and felt that you presented your topic in an educational, yet humorous way.  They now understand how much being a well-rounded and diverse individual can benefit them both now and in the future. “

“Once again, thank you so much for presenting a great program to our students at MVCC.”

Sincerely,

Sandy Cummings, Coordinator, Student Activities

Yes, the noon-hour cafeteria set up was tough for a speaker but I had lots of advance time to plan for it.  By making my college campus diversity talk extremely interactive, we were able to pull it off and the students had a great time and learned as well.

Diversity In Canadian Bobsled Teams

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

The ladies bobsled teams from Canada won gold and silver at the Winter Olympics last night. It was nice to see some diversity among the teams. The silver medal team had one white athlete and one black athlete. The gold medal team had one lady from PEI (eastern Canada Maritimes province) and her partner was from Calgary (western Canada). Diversity can also be regional in addition to racial. It was cool to see people from different backgrounds working together for the common goal of competing and doing well at the Winter Olympics. This is the same type of theme I use during my corporate diversity training programs as well as for college diversity.

Will Use Conference Offtime Productively

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I’ll be in Atlanta all this week showcasing my college diversity presentation at a college campus activities conference and there will be some offtime available.  I plan to use this offtime as productively as possible.  I’ll make sure that I make a trip to the hotel gym to workout and if there is no gym at the hotel I’m staying at, I’ll just exercise in my hotel room.  Travel is often when many people slack off in exercise because of overeating and lack of activity so a commitment to exercise each day along with not stuffing oneself with too much bad foods are crucial.

I’ll also plan to do a lot of writing for new issues of my Motivational Diversity Success Newsletter and plan new episodes of Clint Cora Motivational WebTV.  The premiere episode is still right at the top of the homepage of my clintcora.com website as of this week.

College Diversity Program Now Has Added Job Hunting Component

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Since many college and university students these days are often worried about how to find their first big career jobs when they graduate, I’ve decided to enhance my college diversity program “Kick Down Diversity Barriers For Success” by adding a special job hunting component.

I will be covering great tips on how graduating students can land their first jobs in their chosen careers especially in this new diverse working environment.  I will talk about resumes, job interviews and networking with diversity skills in mind in order to maximize chances of employment.  This will help college students who won’t be graduating yet as well as they can use these same diversity skills in their job hunts for appropriate summer or part time employment.  I was a hiring manager for a pharmaceutical company so I certainly saw my share of resumes and diversity so I have some great tips to offer.  Check out the description of my new enhanced college diversity program.

College Diversity Was Discussed During Radio Interview

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

The subject of diversity and more specifically, college diversity, was discussed during my radio interview yesterday at ThatChannel. It was brought up because the host Hugh Reilly said that when he was in college, it was not really all that diverse. We all agreed on that with similar observations from our own school days and how things have changed. College diversity is becoming an important topic on campuses these days. As soon as this radio interview becomes available online, it will be announced here.
